A Therapists Guide by Kalanit Ben-Ari, Ph.D.
This lecture is designed to provide therapists with an in-depth understanding of the five key dimensions that are essential for working with trauma. Trauma is a complex and multifaceted experience, and requires a comprehensive approach in order to facilitate healing and recovery. In this lecture, we will explore the five dimensions of trauma work that are crucial for effective therapeutic interventions.
The first dimension we will examine is the physiological dimension. Trauma can have a profound impact on the body, and it is important for therapists to understand the ways in which trauma affects the nervous system and other bodily systems. We will discuss the importance of techniques such as mindfulness, deep breathing, and body scanning in regulating the body's response to trauma.
The second dimension we will explore is the affective dimension. Trauma often generates strong emotional responses such as fear, anger, and shame. We will discuss the ways in which these emotions can be both hindrances and opportunities for healing, and explore therapeutic approaches for helping clients navigate their emotional experiences.
The third dimension we will examine is the cognitive dimension. Trauma can disrupt a person's sense of self and worldview, leading to negative beliefs and distorted thinking patterns. We will discuss the role of cognitive restructuring and other cognitive-behavioral techniques in helping clients overcome these challenges.
The fourth dimension we will explore is the interpersonal dimension. Trauma can have a profound impact on a person's relationships and social interactions. We will discuss the ways in which trauma can lead to social isolation, mistrust, and difficulties with intimacy, and explore therapeutic interventions for helping clients develop healthy relationships.
The final dimension we will examine is the spiritual dimension. Trauma can challenge a person's sense of meaning and purpose, leading to existential questions and a loss of connection to something greater than oneself. We will discuss the importance of addressing spiritual concerns in trauma work, and explore therapeutic approaches for helping clients find meaning and purpose in their lives.
By the end of this replay, participants will have a deeper understanding of the five key dimensions for working with trauma, and will be equipped with practical tools and techniques for helping clients navigate the complex terrain of trauma recovery.
In this lecture, Dr. Kalanit Ben-Ari will draw upon her extensive clinical experience and her personal life experiences to provide real-world examples of the five dimensions for working with trauma. Dr. Ben-Ari is known for her ability to bridge and integrate different therapeutic modalities to meet the specific needs of her clients, and this lecture is no exception. The ideas for this talk came together during a 10-day individual silent retreat, where Dr. Ben-Ari had the opportunity to reflect deeply on her clinical work and personal experiences. Her 5 dimensions model will offer therapists a valuable map for understanding the different layers and complexity of trauma, and will provide practical guidance for helping clients on their journey towards healing and recovery.
This recording is a replay of a live 2-hour talk for therapists.
